Daman (liability for loss)
Possession or obligation that makes the holder answerable for an asset's loss, whatever the cause.
Daman is liability for property: the person who holds an asset on a liability basis must return it, or its value, if it is lost or destroyed, whatever the cause. AAOIFI's standard on possession defines possession creating liability as acquiring a thing in a way that obliges the holder to return a fungible item or pay the value of a non-fungible one on its loss. The same word is used more broadly for guarantee and compensation, which is why reading the context matters. In product design, daman and amanah together decide which party carries the risk of an asset at each step.
